There are several ways to apply essential oils, and also some rules that are important. NEVER put undiluted oils directly on your skin. Some oils probably should not be used directly on the skin at all. Each oil should have specific instructions. I would recommend buying your oils in the form of sprays, soaps, elixirs, incense and especially candles. If you do buy pure undiluted essential oils you should mix them with a pure vegetable carrier oil, such as grapeseed or jojoba. Only a couple of drops put on the right spot are all that is needed, a small 1oz bottle should last you quite a while.
Additionally, some essential oils are effective for as little as three hours while others last up to a week depending upon what, when, where and how applied. There is an amazing list of almost 200 different ailments, emotions and conditions that can be treated with essential oils.
Blends, usage notes, special warnings and production methods aside, here are several examples of mood enhancing essential oils that can change your mood quickly, effectively, and usually without too much cost:
Orange - Helps diminish depression
Lavender - Fabulous for its relaxing, calming and soothing benefits
Grapefruit - Helps relieve stress, also treats anxiety and depression
Geranium - Works great as an anti-depressant, very calming
Clary Sage - Does wonders for stress and tension
Chamomile - Maybe the most popular around for calming and soothing one's spirit
Ylang Ylang - A very sensual oil that helps sooth ones mood and helps lift depression
This is just a small sample of the power of essential oils used with aromatherapy.
Again, this is just an overview. There are also safety notes and conditions under which use is not suggested; Some oils should not be used when pregnant. Direct sunlight should be avoided when using angelica or citrus oils. People with epilepsy should not use sage, rosemary, sweet fennel or hyssop. And one last example is thyme, rosemary, sage and hyssop should not be used if you have high blood pressure. So make sure to do a little homework before trying a new essential oil. Most oils come with instructions for use, and/or you can do a search for your specific oil, there are many excellent references available for you to use.
Finally, using an oil in a special blend designed for a specific purpose is usually your best bet. Pure oils are usually for a specific symptom, applied to a specific spot. Sprays that you can use on your neck or clothes to enjoy for hours or all day are inexpensive and very effective. Bathing in a specific mix say for just calming you and relieving stress is amazing. The options are many and pretty much all are effective so shop a little before you buy, and then enjoy a more relaxed, much calmer you.
Here's to a peaceful mind and a stress free spirit.
